Description
Level the stance. Forged torsion keys. No shocks required.
The 1997–2003 F-150 4WD uses torsion bars as the front spring medium. The factory torsion keys index those bars at a preload position that creates a slight nose-down rake from the factory. The F78 corrects it by replacing the factory keys with forged units that index the torsion bar at a higher preload position — raising the front 2 inches without spacers, shock replacement, or suspension geometry modification.
The Zone Offroad F78 is the direct-replacement leveling solution for the 1997–2003 F-150 4WD platform. Forged torsion key replacement, adjuster bolt calibration per Zone's instructions, level stance. If your F-150 is a 2WD model, this kit does not fit — the 2WD uses a twin I-beam front suspension, not torsion bars. If your F-150 is a 2004 or newer model, this kit does not fit — the 2004+ uses a coil-over strut suspension with a completely different leveling method.

How torsion key leveling works: The torsion bar front suspension stores energy by twisting the bar — the torsion key is the component that sets the indexing position of that twist. Factory keys set the bar at a slightly lower preload, creating the nose-down rake from the factory. Zone Offroad's forged replacement keys index the bar at a higher preload position, raising the front 2 inches. After key installation, the torsion bar adjuster bolt is calibrated per the Zone Offroad instructions to achieve and maintain the correct 2-inch lift height.
Why this kit doesn't apply to 2WD or 2004+ F-150:
| Configuration | Front Suspension | This Kit |
|---|---|---|
| 1997–2003 F-150 4WD | Torsion bar | ✅ Fits |
| 1997–2003 F-150 2WD | Twin I-beam | ❌ Does NOT fit |
| 2004+ F-150 | Coil-over strut | ❌ Does NOT fit |
Kit contents:
- Forged replacement torsion keys (pair)
- All required hardware
✅ This kit fits — 1997–2003 F-150 4WD torsion bar only
| Vehicle | Drivetrain | Model Years | Suspension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 | 4WD only | 1997–2003 | Torsion bar front — confirmed |
❌ This kit does NOT fit — read before ordering
| Vehicle / Configuration | Reason |
|---|---|
| 1997–2003 Ford F-150 2WD | Twin I-beam front suspension — torsion keys do not apply |
| 2004 or newer Ford F-150 | Coil-over strut front suspension — different leveling method required |
| Ford F-250 or F-350 | Incompatible platform |
2WD F-150 owners — stop here: The 1997–2003 F-150 2WD uses a twin I-beam front suspension — torsion bars are not part of the 2WD architecture. This kit does not apply.
2004+ F-150 owners — stop here: The 2004 F-150 introduced a coil-over strut front suspension. Torsion key leveling is not applicable. A coil spacer leveling kit is the correct approach for that generation. Text (469) 407-7538 with your year and we'll confirm the right kit.
Before You Buy — Questions We Get Asked
Q: How do I know if my F-150 4WD has torsion bars?
The 1997–2003 F-150 4WD uses torsion bars as the front spring medium. Look under the front of the truck — you'll see two long steel bars running lengthwise from the lower control arms toward the frame crossmember, with adjuster bolts at the frame end. If you see coil springs or struts at the front suspension instead, your truck does not have torsion bars. Text (469) 407-7538 with your year and drivetrain and we'll confirm before you order.
Q: What's the difference between torsion key leveling and a coil spacer leveling kit?
Torsion key leveling is specific to torsion bar suspension systems. The factory torsion key sets the preload position of the torsion bar — replacing it with a forged key at a higher indexing position raises the front without adding any spacer hardware. Coil spacer kits apply to coil-spring or coil-over strut suspensions — they physically insert a spacer on top of the coil. Neither method applies to the other suspension type.
Q: Do I need new shocks after installing torsion keys?
No — factory shocks are fully compatible with a 2-inch torsion key lift. The shock shaft doesn't reach its travel limit at 2 inches of added preload on this platform. For high-mileage trucks with worn shocks, this is a reasonable time to assess shock condition, but replacement is not required by this kit.
Q: How does this ship?
At 8 lbs, this kit ships standard freight — free shipping to the Lower 48. No freight coordination required. Professional installation is recommended — torsion bar unloading and proper torque sequencing are required for correct installation.
The Obsidian Take
The F78 is for the 1997–2003 F-150 4WD owner who wants to level the stance and eliminate factory rake with the correct method for the platform — forged torsion key replacement that works with the torsion bar architecture rather than around it. No spacers stacked on top of springs. No shock replacement. The forged keys index the torsion bar at a higher preload position, the adjuster bolt is calibrated per Zone's instructions, and the front comes up 2 inches to match the rear. At 8 lbs it ships free to the Lower 48 with no freight coordination. One installation session, one alignment check, done.
This kit is not for 2WD F-150 owners — the twin I-beam front suspension doesn't use torsion bars, so torsion keys don't apply. It is not for 2004 or newer F-150 owners — the coil-over strut suspension requires a spacer-based leveling approach. It is not for F-250 or F-350 owners. If a full-height lift rather than a leveling correction is the goal, text us your year and build and we'll confirm the correct lift kit for this platform.
