Flange tab note: Clayton's product page states "a new flange tab with hardware is included with this kit." Buyers purchasing the plate-only COR-4108114 should confirm with Clayton whether the flange tab is included at this variant or only with the complete kit (COR-4108112). If not included, order COR-4108113 hardware kit separately. Text (469) 407-7538 before ordering if unclear.
What makes this skid different from the engine skid: The transfer case skid plate covers two critical components simultaneously — the transfer case itself and the Clayton long arm crossmember. The crossmember is exposed when running the JK long arm system, making this skid plate the primary structural protection for both the drivetrain component and the custom fabrication underneath the truck.
Complete kit option: If you need the plate, flange tab, and all hardware together, order COR-4108112 ($399.00 — complete kit). Hardware only is available as COR-4108113.

Critical Compatibility
The factory crossmember is an absolute incompatibility — same rule as the engine skid. This plate was dimensioned specifically to the Clayton crossmember geometry. The OEM crossmember has different spatial relationships to the transfer case and mounting points. There is no adapter that makes this plate work with the factory crossmember.
Drilling is mandatory — not optional. One 1/2" hole must be drilled on the passenger side to fully secure the plate. This is confirmed on Clayton's own product page and across all retailer listings. The passenger side flange cannot be fully secured without this hole. If drilling capability is not available, professional installation is required.
Three-point mounting interface is the defining characteristic of this skid. Unlike the engine skid (motor mounts only), the transfer case skid mounts at three locations: the Clayton crossmember, the OEM gas tank mount location, and stock frame mounting points. This three-point attachment distributes load across the full undercarriage structure — and it means all three mounting points must be accessible and compatible before installation begins.
| Scenario | Result |
|---|---|
| 2007–2018 JK or JK Unlimited — with COR-2108112 long arm crossmember | Confirmed fit — drilling required |
| 2007–2018 JK or JK Unlimited — with COR-2108212 HD crossmember | Confirmed fit — drilling required |
| 2007–2018 JK or JK Unlimited — factory crossmember | Does NOT fit — crossmember replacement required |
| JL Wrangler, JT Gladiator | Does NOT fit |
| Drilling capability not available | Professional installation required |
| Bare metal arrives with surface rust | Normal — not a defect; prime and paint before installation |
| System integration with engine and gas tank skids | Confirmed — all three lock together for continuous underbody surface |
Installation Notes
Skill level: Intermediate — drilling required. Three-point mounting with the Clayton crossmember, OEM gas tank mount, and stock frame mounting adds complexity versus the engine skid's simpler motor mount attachment.
Tools required: Drill with 1/2" bit (required — cannot complete installation without it), socket set, torque wrench. Primer and paint for bare metal surface treatment.
Drilling note — critical: One 1/2" hole must be drilled on the passenger side of the JK to secure the passenger-side flange of the skid plate. Clayton supplies a flange tab with hardware specifically for this step. Do not attempt to install the plate without completing this drilling step — the passenger side will not be fully secured without it.
Bare metal surface prep: Wire brush any surface rust from shipping. Prime and coat all bare steel before installation.
Installation sequence in the context of the full skid system:
- Confirm the Clayton COR-2108112 or COR-2108212 crossmember is installed.
- Apply finish to bare metal before installation.
- Drill the required 1/2" hole on the passenger side per Clayton's installation instructions for the flange tab location.
- Position the transfer case skid plate with the mounting points aligned to the Clayton crossmember, OEM gas tank mount, and stock frame points.
- Install the flange tab with included hardware at the drilled hole location.
- Install remaining hardware at the crossmember, gas tank mount, and frame mounting locations.
- Torque all hardware to specification.
- If installing the full system: fit the engine skid plate forward and the gas tank skid plate rearward after the transfer case skid is torqued — confirm all interlocking seams are flush before final torque on the companion skids.
Common Questions
What's the difference between COR-4108112 and COR-4108114?
Hardware. COR-4108112 is the complete kit — skid plate, flange tab, and all hardware. COR-4108114 is the plate only. For a new installation, order COR-4108112. COR-4108114 is for owners replacing a worn or damaged plate on an existing installation who already have hardware, or for whom the complete kit is unavailable.
Do I really need to drill a hole?
Yes — confirmed on Clayton's own product page and across all retailer listings. One 1/2" hole on the passenger side is required to fully secure the plate via the flange tab. This is not optional. A drill and 1/2" bit are required before starting the installation.
Does this cover the Clayton crossmember too?
Yes — and this is the key functional distinction of the transfer case skid versus the other two skids in the system. Clayton explicitly states the plate "completely covers and protects our JK long arm cross member as well." The crossmember is custom fabrication that is not factory-protected — the transfer case skid plate is its primary underbody armor.
Can I install this on a stock crossmember JK?
No. This skid plate will not work with the factory JK crossmember. A Clayton 3-piece long arm crossmember (COR-2108112) or HD crossmember (COR-2108212) must be installed first.
Where does the hardware come from if I'm ordering plate only?
Clayton states a "flange tab with hardware" is included — but this language appears in the context of the complete kit description. Before ordering COR-4108114 plate only, text (469) 407-7538 or confirm with Clayton whether the flange tab and installation hardware are included with the plate-only SKU. If not, order COR-4108113 hardware separately.
The Obsidian Take
The transfer case skid plate is the structural center of the Clayton JK underbody protection system — positioned between the engine skid forward and the gas tank skid rearward, and uniquely serving dual protective function: it covers the transfer case and the Clayton crossmember simultaneously. No other component in the system covers the crossmember. If you're running a Clayton long arm or HD crossmember and don't have the transfer case skid installed, the crossmember itself is exposed on the underside.
The drilling requirement is the one step that catches people off guard on this installation. It's a single 1/2" hole — manageable with any cordless drill — but it must be done before the passenger-side flange can be fully secured. The flange tab that goes in that hole is included and sized for this exact purpose. The work is minor; the requirement is absolute.
The three-point mounting interface (crossmember + gas tank mount + frame) is what gives this skid plate its rigidity under impact. Unlike a plate that hangs from two points, this design distributes load across three structural references — which is why it can cover both the transfer case and the crossmember without flex under rock contact.
For owners building the complete skid system: install the transfer case skid plate before fitting the gas tank skid plate rearward — the gas tank skid's forward edge interlocks with the transfer case skid's rear edge, and you need the transfer case skid torqued and positioned correctly before the gas tank skid can be fitted cleanly.
This SKU is for: 2007–2018 JK owners (2-door and 4-door) with the Clayton long arm crossmember (COR-2108112) or HD crossmember (COR-2108212) installed who need the transfer case skid plate only (no hardware), have confirmed flange tab inclusion, have drilling capability, and are prepared to finish bare metal before installation.
This SKU is NOT for: JK owners on the factory crossmember (incompatible), anyone without drilling capability or access to a shop, anyone needing the complete kit with all hardware (order COR-4108112), JL or JT owners, or anyone who receives bare metal with cosmetic marks and considers that a defect.
