Complete kit option: If you need the skid plate and hardware together, order COR-4106110 ($299.00 — complete kit). Hardware only is available separately as COR-4106111 ($15.00). COR-4106112 at $284.00 is the plate without hardware.

Alignment jig function — critical installation detail: Clayton explicitly recommends purchasing this skid plate with the new unibody rails (COR-2206210) because the skid plate itself serves as the alignment jig when positioning the rails at the required 39.25" spacing before reweld. This means the correct installation sequence is: position rails using the skid plate to set 39.25" spacing → drill → reweld rails → install skid plate. Do not reweld rails without the skid plate on hand to use as the alignment reference.

Critical Compatibility

This is the most fabrication-intensive skid plate in this catalog. Every other skid plate in this series is bolt-on (with drilling at most one hole). The WJ transfer case skid plate requires drilling into the unibody rails AND rewelding them at a precise spacing dimension. This is not a beginner installation — it requires a welder, a drill, and the confidence to permanently modify the WJ's unibody structure. Professional fabrication shop installation is strongly recommended for anyone without welding experience.

Old-style rails are incompatible — hard stop. Clayton explicitly states: "Does not work with old-style crossmember and 2" tall unibody rails." The geometry simply doesn't align with older rail configurations. If you're on old-style rails, the path to this skid plate runs through a COR-2206210 redesigned unibody rail upgrade. There is no adapter or workaround.

The skid plate is the alignment tool. Clayton's recommended procedure is to purchase the skid plate alongside the COR-2206210 unibody rails if you're doing the rail upgrade, because the skid plate sets the 39.25" rail spacing before the rails are welded. Buying the plate after welded rails means confirming your already-welded rail spacing matches 39.25" — a preventable risk.

Exhaust routing. Clayton's own product page and multiple retailer listings all carry the same note: "May not fit with some exhaust systems." Verify your specific exhaust routing clears the skid plate position before ordering. Aftermarket exhaust systems in particular may require routing adjustments.

2005–2010 Grand Cherokee WK Does NOT fit — different platform
WJ with aftermarket exhaust Verify routing before ordering — may conflict
Welding not available Professional installation required — this is a fabrication install
Hardware not ordered Order COR-4106111 ($15.00) before installation begins

Installation Notes

Skill level: Advanced. Drilling and welding of the WJ unibody rails are required. This is not a bolt-on installation. Professional fabrication shop work is required unless the installer has welding experience and appropriate equipment.

Tools required:

  • Welder — required for rail reweld
  • Drill with appropriate bit for unibody rail drilling
  • Tape measure or calipers for 39.25" rail spacing verification
  • Socket set and torque wrench for hardware installation
  • Primer and paint for bare metal surface treatment

Installation sequence — critical order of operations:

  1. Confirm COR-2206210 redesigned unibody rails are on hand (not yet welded if doing the rail upgrade simultaneously).
  2. Confirm COR-2106110 3-piece long arm crossmember is installed.
  3. Confirm COR-4106111 hardware kit is on hand before beginning.
  4. Use the skid plate as an alignment jig: Position the COR-2206210 rails at 39.25" apart using the skid plate to set the correct spacing. Do not weld the rails without the skid plate in hand to confirm spacing.
  5. Drill the rails at the required locations per Clayton's installation instructions.
  6. Reweld the rails at the confirmed 39.25" spacing.
  7. Apply primer and preferred coating to all bare metal on the skid plate before installation.
  8. Install the skid plate using the COR-4106111 hardware. Torque to specification using Grade 8 hardware at the appropriate torque for your fastener diameter.
  9. Verify exhaust routing clears the skid plate at all positions through the full steering range before driving.

Bare metal finish: Wire brush any surface rust from shipping. Apply primer and preferred coating before installation. Do not install bare metal.

Common Questions

Does this fit my stock WJ?
No — this skid plate is explicitly not intended for stock setups. Clayton's own product page states "This kit is NOT intended to be used on a stock setup." A Clayton long arm system with redesigned unibody rails (COR-2206210) and 3-piece long arm crossmember (COR-2106110) are required.

What's the difference between COR-4106112 and COR-4106110?
Hardware. COR-4106110 is the complete kit — skid plate plus hardware — at $299.00. COR-4106112 is the plate only at $284.00. For a new installation, order COR-4106110 to ensure you have everything. Order COR-4106112 only if you already have hardware or are replacing a plate.

Why does this require welding when most skid plates don't?
The WJ Grand Cherokee is a unibody vehicle — it doesn't have a traditional body-on-frame architecture like the JK Wrangler. The unibody rails must be correctly positioned at 39.25" apart and rewelded as the structural foundation for this skid plate. This is a fundamental architectural difference from body-on-frame applications where skid plates can bolt to existing crossmembers or motor mounts.

My WJ has old-style rails — can I use this plate?
Not without upgrading to the COR-2206210 redesigned unibody rails. Clayton explicitly states old-style crossmembers and 2" tall unibody rails are incompatible with this skid plate's geometry. The rail upgrade is the prerequisite.

Why should I buy the skid plate and rails at the same time?
Because the skid plate is the alignment jig for setting rail spacing at 39.25" before reweld. If you weld rails first without the skid plate to confirm spacing, you risk geometry misalignment that prevents the skid plate from fitting. Clayton recommends purchasing both simultaneously for this reason.

The Obsidian Take

The COR-4106112 is not a casual purchase. It's a structural armor component that requires permanent modification to the WJ's unibody structure to install, is dependent on Clayton's redesigned rail and crossmember architecture, and exists for a specific buyer: a serious WJ builder who has already committed to the Clayton long arm system and is closing out their underbody protection build.

The WJ Grand Cherokee is a unibody platform — which is precisely why this installation requires more involvement than the equivalent JK skid plate. There's no pre-existing crossmember geometry to bolt to. The redesigned unibody rails provide that foundation, and the skid plate knits the whole thing together. When correctly installed with the COR-2206210 rails and COR-2106110 crossmember, the skid plate protects the transfer case from direct rock strikes on technical terrain — the single most expensive drivetrain component to replace on the WJ.

The alignment jig detail is worth internalizing before ordering. If you're planning a rail upgrade alongside this plate, buy both at the same time. Welding rails first and then discovering the spacing doesn't match the skid plate's requirements is an avoidable mistake.

At $284.00 for the plate only (or $299.00 for the complete kit with hardware), and with a $15.00 hardware kit separately available, this is priced as a purpose-built fabrication component — not a consumer accessory. If the fabrication work involved is outside your capability, plan for a competent offroad fabrication shop to handle installation. The complexity is real, but so is the protection it delivers.

This SKU is for: 1999–2004 WJ Grand Cherokee builders running the Clayton long arm system with redesigned COR-2206210 unibody rails and COR-2106110 crossmember installed, who have welding capability (or access to a fabrication shop), need transfer case protection for technical terrain use, and have confirmed exhaust routing compatibility.

This SKU is NOT for: Stock WJ owners, WJ owners on old-style rails (upgrade to COR-2206210 first), anyone without welding access or fabrication capability, 2005+ WK Grand Cherokee owners (different platform), or anyone ordering without the COR-4106111 hardware kit on hand.
