Critical Compatibility

Installation Notes

Skill level: Intermediate to advanced — MIG or TIG welding required. Owner-performed installation is viable with basic welding competency. Professional fabrication shop installation is the correct path if welding is not available on-site.

Tools required: Welder (MIG or TIG), wire brush or grinder for surface prep, grinder for weld cleanup, primer and paint or rattle can for surface finish, basic positioning clamps or magnets.

Installation sequence:

1. Safely lift and support the vehicle — front suspension accessible.
2. Clean the front face of the OEM front lower control arm brackets on both sides — remove all dirt, grease, undercoating, and loose paint from the weld area. Weld adhesion requires clean bare steel.
3. Dry-fit the driver-side mini skid plate against the front face of the OEM bracket — confirm the plate seats flush and squarely.
4. Tack weld in position at two or more points — confirm alignment before completing the weld.
5. Complete the weld per Clayton's installation instructions — full perimeter or weld as specified.
6. Repeat for the passenger side.
7. Allow all welds to cool fully before handling.
8. Grind the weld faces smooth as needed, then prime and paint or apply preferred corrosion-resistant coating to all bare steel surfaces exposed by the welding process.
9. Cycle the front suspension through full droop and full compression — confirm no contact between the installed skid plates and adjacent components at either extreme.

No paint or finish is included. Post-weld surface treatment is required to prevent rust — the 1/4" steel plates and any exposed OEM bracket steel will corrode without primer and paint or a bed liner-style coating.

Common Questions

Why do the front skids require welding when the rear skids don't?
The front lower control arm brackets are the highest-stress attachment points in the front suspension system. Clayton's weld-on design for the front integrates the skid plate structurally with the OEM bracket, creating a reinforced unit rather than just a protective cover. The rear shock bracket and lower control arm locations on the JL (covered by COR-4109030) are a different geometry and load environment where bolt-on installation achieves the protective function without the structural reinforcement benefit — hence the different installation approach.

Can a beginner do this installation?
Only with access to welding equipment and basic welding competency. If you've never welded before, this is not the project to learn on — the tack-and-weld procedure needs to hold under trail loading. A local fabrication shop can install these in under an hour.

Do these fit both the JL and JT?
Yes — COR-4109020 fits the front lower control arm brackets on both the 2018–2026 Jeep Wrangler JL and 2020–2026 Gladiator JT. The front bracket geometry is compatible across both platforms.

The COR-4109020 is the correct choice when you want more than protection — you want reinforcement. Bolt-on skid plates add a sacrificial barrier in front of the factory bracket. These weld-on plates add material to the bracket itself. That's a meaningful engineering difference when you're rock crawling and a direct hit to the lower control arm bracket would otherwise bend a factory steel component that can only be replaced, not bent back.

At $39.00 for a pair, this is the lowest-cost bracket reinforcement available for the JL and JT platforms and one of the highest protection-per-dollar additions in the Clayton lineup.
