Rubicon (Rock-Trac) and Sahara (Selec-Trac) trims typically include FAD; base Sport and Sport S models with the standard Command-Trac may not. If unsure, look for the FAD unit on the passenger side of the front axle — it will be visible as a motor-driven disconnect housing.

Why the rear is taller: The FAD unit's plastic and aluminum disconnector motor housing projects rearward from the main FAD body. A flat-profile skid plate would cover the front of the FAD mount but leave the motor housing exposed. Clayton's rear section is intentionally taller to wrap coverage around and over the disconnector motor — the component most vulnerable to damage from rocks passing under the axle at an angle.

Countersunk lower bolts: Standard bolt heads at the lower 2 mounting points would create a protrusion that reduces ground clearance at a location already close to the ground. Countersunk bolts sit flush with the skid plate surface — maintaining the smoothest possible undercarriage profile for sliding over rock surfaces.

COR-5209011 is mandatory, not optional. The stock steering stabilizer bracket physically occupies space required by this skid plate. The skid plate cannot be installed without removing the stock bracket. Clayton's COR-5209011 high-clearance, over-the-tie-rod steering stabilizer conversion bracket relocates the mounting point and allows the FAD skid plate to install correctly. This bracket must be ordered and installed before or concurrently with the COR-4109010.


Critical Compatibility

Two gates must be cleared before this product is right for your build: FAD presence and the COR-5209011 prerequisite.

FAD presence. The front axle disconnect unit is not present on every JL and JT. It is a component of specific transfer case and drivetrain configurations. Before ordering, verify the FAD unit is physically present on your front axle. Clayton's own package installation notes flag this explicitly — "Not all models use a front axle disconnect." If your JL or JT does not have the FAD unit, this skid plate has no application on your vehicle.

COR-5209011 is a required companion purchase. The stock steering stabilizer bracket must be removed before this skid plate installs. This is not a minor clearance issue — the stock bracket physically prevents the skid plate from seating. Clayton's own product page states: "This skid plate REQUIRES the removal of your stock steering stabilizer bracket. We offer a high clearance, over the tie rod steering stabilizer conversion bracket. Part # COR-5209011." Order COR-5209011 at the same time as this skid plate. Do not order COR-4109010 expecting to install it without addressing the steering stabilizer bracket.

Steering range verification post-installation: The FAD skid plate is in close proximity to steering components. After installation, manually cycle through the full steering range — lock to lock — before trail use. Confirm no contact between the skid plate and the tie rod, drag link, or other steering components at any point in the steering range.

Installation Notes

Skill level: Intermediate — bolt-on, but the COR-5209011 prerequisite must be completed first, and bolt alignment requires care per owner review documentation.

Tools required: Basic socket set and wrench, torque wrench.

Installation sequence:

Step 1 — Required prerequisite (do not skip):
Install COR-5209011 high-clearance, over-the-tie-rod steering stabilizer conversion bracket per its own installation instructions before proceeding to the FAD skid plate. Remove and discard the stock steering stabilizer bracket — it cannot remain in place.

Step 2 — FAD skid plate installation:

  1. Position the FAD skid plate over the front axle disconnect unit.
  2. Start by loosely threading the top 4 factory hardware bolts — do not torque yet.
  3. Install the included countersunk bolts at the lower 2 mounting locations — use light tapping with a rubber mallet to align bolt holes if needed (owner-confirmed installation technique).
  4. Once all 6 mounting points are loosely engaged, verify alignment and seat the skid plate fully.
  5. Torque all 6 mounting points to specification — top 4 factory hardware bolts first, then lower 2 countersunk bolts.

Step 3 — Post-installation verification:
Cycle steering lock-to-lock manually at ride height and confirm no contact between the skid plate and any steering or suspension component across the full range. Do not drive until clearance is verified.

Installation note from owner experience: Bolt alignment can require minor positioning — a rubber mallet tap from different angles while bolts are loosely installed is the confirmed field technique. Do not force-torque out of alignment.


Common Questions

Does my JL have a front axle disconnect?
Not all JL Wranglers have the FAD system. Rubicon models (Rock-Trac transfer case) and Sahara models (Selec-Trac transfer case) typically have FAD. Sport and Sport S models with the standard Command-Trac transfer case typically do not. Look for the FAD unit on the passenger side of the front axle — it will be visible as a motor-driven disconnect housing attached to the axle shaft. If it's not there, this skid plate has no application on your vehicle.

Do I really need to order COR-5209011 separately?

What does COR-5209011 do?

Is this bolt-on or does it require welding?
100% bolt-on — no cutting or welding required for the FAD skid plate itself. The prerequisite COR-5209011 is also bolt-on. The only weld-on component in the Clayton JL/JT skid system is the front lower control arm bracket mini skid plates (COR-4109020).

What does the taller rear section protect?
The rear section is made taller specifically to cover the plastic and aluminum disconnector motor housing that projects rearward from the main FAD body. This motor controls engagement and disengagement of the front axle — if it cracks from a rock strike, the 4WD disconnect system stops functioning. The taller rear section addresses that specific vulnerability.


The Obsidian Take

The FAD unit on the JL and JT is one of the few components in the entire suspension system where a single rock strike can disable a core drivetrain function. The plastic and aluminum disconnector motor housing is fragile relative to the steel it lives near — it was not designed with rock crawling in mind. When it breaks on the trail, your front axle disconnect stops working, and you're either stuck in 2WD or stuck in 4WD depending on the position it failed in. Neither is a good outcome mid-trail.
