Fitment, Shipping & Product Support

⚠️ PREREQUISITE: This engine skid plate will NOT work with the factory JK crossmember. Clayton's 3-piece long arm crossmember (COR-2108112) or HD crossmember (COR-2108212) is required.

⚠️ SHIPS BARE METAL: Surface rust and cosmetic scratches during shipping are normal and not eligible for return, replacement, or compensation.

Verified Fitment

Year Range Make Model Configuration Note
2007–2018 Jeep Wrangler JK 2-Door — All Trims Clayton crossmember required
2007–2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK 4-Door — All Trims Clayton crossmember required

Does NOT fit:

  • Any JK running the factory crossmember — this skid plate is incompatible with the OEM crossmember without exception; a Clayton 3-piece long arm crossmember (COR-2108112) or HD crossmember (COR-2108212) must be installed
  • Jeep Wrangler JL (2018–2026) — different engine and crossmember architecture
  • Jeep Wrangler TJ / LJ (1997–2006) — different engine skid plate architecture
  • Jeep Gladiator JT — different platform

Crossmember verification — required before ordering: This skid plate was engineered specifically to the geometry of the Clayton JK long arm crossmember system. Without one of the two compatible Clayton crossmembers installed, the skid plate will not seat or mount correctly. Confirm your crossmember before ordering.

What Is and Is NOT Included

Included NOT Included
COR-4108914 engine / oil pan skid plate — 1/4" bare metal steel Clayton 3-piece long arm crossmember (COR-2108112 — required; sold separately)
COR-4108913 Grade 8 hardware kit — motor mount fasteners Clayton HD crossmember (COR-2108212 — alternative required crossmember; sold separately)
Transfer case skid plate (separate SKU — sold separately)
Gas tank skid plate — 2-door version (separate SKU — sold separately)
Gas tank skid plate — 4-door version (separate SKU — sold separately)
Primer, paint, or finish coating for bare metal surface treatment

Complete underbody protection: This engine skid plate is the first component in Clayton's three-piece interlocking JK underbody protection system. For full coverage, pair with the Clayton transfer case skid plate and the appropriate gas tank skid plate (2-door or 4-door sold separately). All three interlock for a seamless, smooth undercarriage surface. Clayton also offers complete 2-door and 4-door skid plate systems (COR-4108002 and COR-4108004) if you prefer to purchase the full system at once.

Critical Compatibility

The factory crossmember is an absolute incompatibility — not a clearance adjustment.

This is not a skid plate that installs with minor modification on a stock JK. The geometry of the COR-4108912 is dimensioned to Clayton's long arm crossmember architecture. The OEM crossmember has different geometry, different mounting point locations, and different spatial relationships to the motor mounts. There is no adapter, spacer, or modification that makes this skid plate work with the factory crossmember. If you don't have a Clayton crossmember, this is not the correct product.

Bare metal shipping is a known and documented characteristic, not a defect.

Clayton explicitly states bare metal shipping and explicitly excludes cosmetic issues from damage claims, returns, and compensation. This is structural steel — surface rust from transit does not affect performance. Prime and paint before installation to prevent ongoing corrosion. If cosmetic condition on arrival matters to you, contact Clayton for a freight pallet shipping quote before placing the order.

System integration context. The engine skid plate, transfer case skid plate, and gas tank skid plate are designed as an interlocking system. Installing only the engine skid without the transfer case skid leaves the transfer case and Clayton crossmember exposed. The three pieces lock together — installing them together rather than sequentially is the recommended approach.

Scenario Result
2007–2018 JK — with COR-2108112 (3-piece long arm crossmember) Confirmed fit
2007–2018 JK — with COR-2108212 (HD crossmember) Confirmed fit
2007–2018 JK — factory crossmember Does NOT fit — crossmember replacement required
JK 2-Door — all trims Confirmed fit (with Clayton crossmember)
JK 4-Door (Unlimited) — all trims Confirmed fit (with Clayton crossmember)
JL, JT, TJ, LJ Does NOT fit
Bare metal arrives with surface rust Normal — not a defect; prime and paint before installation
Running as standalone without transfer case skid Functional but incomplete — install with full system for continuous coverage

Installation Notes

Skill level: Intermediate — bolt-on at motor mounts with Clayton crossmember installed. If installing as part of a complete long arm kit build, intermediate to advanced.

Tools required: Basic socket set and torque wrench. Wire brush or grinder and primer/paint for bare metal surface treatment. No drilling required for the engine skid plate specifically.

Bare metal surface prep — required before installation:

  1. Wire brush or lightly sand any surface rust from shipping on all steel surfaces.
  2. Apply primer and preferred paint, powder coat, or undercoating to all bare metal surfaces before installation. Do not install bare metal — moisture and road debris will accelerate rust on unfinished steel undercarriage components.

Installation sequence:

  1. Confirm the Clayton COR-2108112 or COR-2108212 crossmember is installed before proceeding.
  2. Position the engine skid plate under the oil pan, aligned with the stock motor mount locations.
  3. Install the included Grade 8 hardware at the motor mount bolt locations per Clayton's installation instructions.
  4. Torque all Grade 8 hardware to specification.
  5. Verify the oil drain access hole aligns with the oil drain plug — confirm you can reach the drain plug with a wrench without removing the skid plate.
  6. If installing as part of the full system, fit the transfer case skid and gas tank skid concurrently and confirm all interlock seams are flush before final torque on any component.

Freight pallet option: If cosmetic condition on arrival is a concern, contact OFAS or Clayton directly before ordering to arrange freight pallet shipping. Standard bare metal box shipping is the default and carries the documented cosmetic risk.

Common Questions

Will this work on my stock JK?
No — not without replacing the factory crossmember. This skid plate is dimensioned specifically for Clayton's long arm crossmember geometry. The OEM JK crossmember is incompatible. You need either COR-2108112 (3-piece long arm) or COR-2108212 (HD crossmember) installed first.

My skid plate arrived with surface rust — what do I do?
Wire brush the rust, prime, and paint. Clayton explicitly documents bare metal shipping and excludes cosmetic marks from damage claims, returns, and compensation. Surface rust does not affect structural performance. Next time, request freight pallet shipping before ordering if cosmetic condition on arrival matters.

What's the difference between COR-4108912, COR-4108914, and COR-4108913?
COR-4108912 is the complete kit — skid plate plus Grade 8 hardware. COR-4108914 is the skid plate only, without hardware. COR-4108913 is the hardware only, for replacing lost or damaged fasteners on an existing installation. For a new installation, order COR-4108912.

Do I need to remove the skid plate for oil changes?
No — the integrated oil drain access hole is designed so you can drain and refill oil from underneath without removing the skid plate. Verify your drain plug aligns with the hole after installation.

Does this complete my underbody protection?
The engine skid covers the oil pan area only. For complete underbody coverage, you also need the transfer case skid plate (covers the transfer case and Clayton crossmember) and the gas tank skid plate (2-door or 4-door specific). All three interlock for a seamless system. Clayton offers complete skid packages if you want to purchase the full system.

The Obsidian Take

The COR-4108912 is the starting point of Clayton's JK underbody protection system — and the most important piece, because the oil pan is the most immediately terminal component in a rock strike scenario. A cracked oil pan on the trail ends the trip and often the engine. The 1/4" CNC-bent steel, SolidWorks-designed profile delivers meaningful protection without the clearance compromise that thicker, universally-dimensioned plates create.

The long arm crossmember requirement is the one thing to internalize before purchasing. This is not a general-purpose JK oil pan skid. It is a component of a specific suspension architecture, and it only works within that architecture. For JK owners running a Clayton long arm or HD crossmember system, it's a direct bolt-in. For everyone else, the crossmember has to change first.

On the bare metal question: prime and paint before installation. This is steel underbody hardware that will see road salt, mud, and moisture for the life of the vehicle. An afternoon of surface prep prevents years of rust — there's no good reason to skip it.

For a complete protection build, purchase this alongside the transfer case skid and gas tank skid rather than sequentially. The interlocking system installs more cleanly when all three pieces are on hand simultaneously, and the fit references between the components are easier to establish before final torque on any of them.

This SKU is for: 2007–2018 JK owners (2-door and 4-door) running Clayton's long arm system with the 3-piece crossmember (COR-2108112) or HD crossmember (COR-2108212), who want engine and oil pan protection as part of a complete underbody system and are prepared to finish the bare metal before installation.

This SKU is NOT for: JK owners on the factory crossmember (incompatible — crossmember must change first), JL, JT, TJ, or LJ owners, anyone expecting a drop-in to a stock JK undercarriage, or anyone who receives bare metal with cosmetic marks and considers that a defect.
