Description
Split-diameter engineering. Maximum raw steel strength. Complete front-end correction.
The factory tie rod and drag link on the 2003–2013 Ram HD were engineered for narrow stock tires at stock height. When you lift it, add 35s or 37s, and place a heavy Cummins diesel block over the front axle, the factory linkage introduces the component deflection and slop behind Dodge death wobble.
The Apex Chassis KIT180 is the direct heavy-duty replacement. A 1.75" DOM tie rod paired with a 1.5" DOM drag link — split-diameter engineering that maximizes strength at the front-facing impact point while maintaining the clearance profile the upper drag link requires. Oversized rod ends, Ninja Lock-Washers, and E-coat protection. Both components. One kit. The complete front-end correction.
⚠️ Critical read before ordering: 2003–early 2008 trucks with Y-style steering require a T-style pitman arm (sold separately) to complete this installation. Late-2008 (2008.5+) trucks already run T-style from the factory — direct bolt-on. 2013 Ram 3500 — verify T-style vs crossover steering before ordering. Factory stabilizer clamp is NOT compatible — DC154 (OE) or DC151 (Fox ATS) required.

Why the 1.75" x 1.5" split: The main tie rod is the front-facing component that takes direct trail contact and handles maximum lateral load across the solid axle beam — 1.75" DOM maximizes yield resistance at that point. The drag link operates in the tighter space near the passenger-side frame rails and sway bar links — the 1.5" diameter delivers the structural rigidity needed while providing the clearance profile that prevents frame contact during full suspension travel. The same engineering logic drives the split on the 2014+ platform — tight frame clearances dictate drag link diameter.
Why E-coat over powdercoat: The electrochemical E-coat finish seals raw steel against winter road salt, rust, and trail moisture significantly better than standard powdercoat or spray paint — uniform molecular-level bonding across the entire surface rather than a spray-applied layer.
KIT180 vs KIT380-STL: Both use DOM SAE 1020 steel and cover the 2003–2013 Ram HD platform. The KIT380-STL scales both components to 1.75" and uses the premium ProLock machined keyway washer system. The KIT180 uses the 1.75" x 1.5" split-diameter design with Ninja Lock-Washers — delivering significant performance improvement over factory at a more accessible price point. ⚠️ 2003–early 2008 Y-style owners: This kit installs as T-style crossover linkage. If your truck has the factory Y-style pitman arm and has not been converted, you must purchase a T-style compatible pitman arm separately. The pitman arm is NOT included with KIT180. Ordering this kit without the correct pitman arm for a Y-style truck will leave the installation incomplete.
⚠️ 2008.5 mid-year transition: Ram transitioned to factory T-style steering mid-year in 2008. Late-2008 trucks (built after approximately mid-2008) already have the T-style pitman arm and do NOT need the conversion pitman arm. Early-2008 trucks still have Y-style and DO need it. Check your build date on the door jamb sticker — or look under the truck. Y-style: drag link connects to the tie rod bar mid-span. T-style: drag link runs from the steering box directly to the knuckle.
⚠️ 2013 Ram 3500 — verify before ordering: The 2013 Ram 3500 was produced in both T-style and crossover steering configurations. Look under the truck — if the drag link runs from the steering box to the tie rod, it's T-style and this kit fits. If it runs from the steering box directly to the knuckle without touching the tie rod, it's crossover and this kit does not fit. Text us your VIN and we'll confirm.
⚠️ Stabilizer clamp — required additional hardware: The factory thin steel stabilizer clamp will NOT fit the 1.75" tie rod. Add DC154 for OE-style stabilizers or DC151 for Fox ATS-style stabilizers to your order. Text (469) 407-7538 with your stabilizer brand and we'll confirm the correct bracket before we ship.
Supporting mod requirements:
- Lifts 2–4": Direct bolt-on beyond the required stabilizer bracket. No additional hardware.
- Lifts exceeding 4": Track bar relocation bracket recommended to maintain proper front axle centering.
Section 3 — Before You Buy — Questions We Get Asked
Q: How do I know if my 2008 truck has Y-style or T-style steering?
Check your build date on the door jamb sticker. Trucks built after approximately mid-2008 have factory T-style and do not need the conversion pitman arm. Trucks built in early 2008 still have Y-style and do need it. You can also look under the truck — Y-style has the drag link connecting to the tie rod bar mid-span. T-style has the drag link running from the steering box directly to the knuckle. Text us your build date and we'll confirm.
Q: Will this fix death wobble on my 3rd-gen Ram?
Yes — provided ball joints, track bar bushings, and steering box are in good condition. The primary mechanical driver of Ram death wobble is component flex — factory links use thin sleeves that deflect under heavy diesel weight and wide wheel offsets. The KIT180's oversized DOM construction and direct thread-in joint design eliminate that flex point. For a complete fix, confirm the rest of the front-end components are in serviceable condition before installing.
Q: What's the difference between KIT180 and KIT380-STL?
Both use DOM SAE 1020 steel and cover the same 2003–2013 platform. The KIT380-STL scales both components to a matching 1.75" diameter and uses the premium ProLock machined keyway washer system for maximum alignment lock. The KIT180 uses the 1.75" tie rod / 1.5" drag link split with Ninja Lock-Washers — a significant upgrade over factory at a more accessible price point. Text us your build and intended use and we'll confirm which is the right call.
Q: How hard is this install and what will I need?
Intermediate difficulty. Standard hand tools, a torque wrench, and a floor jack are required. A full front-end alignment immediately after is mandatory. 2003–early 2008 trucks must have the T-style pitman arm installed before or during the swap. The factory stabilizer clamp must be replaced with DC154 or DC151 before mounting your stabilizer. Budget one garage session and one same-day alignment appointment — and confirm all required additional hardware before installation day.
The Obsidian Take
The KIT180 is the right call for the 3rd-gen Ram HD owner who wants a substantial heavy-duty upgrade over factory steering without stepping all the way up to the premium ProLock system of the KIT380-STL. The 1.75" x 1.5" split-diameter DOM SAE 1020 construction with hot-forged SAE 1045 housings and induction-hardened SAE 4140 ball studs directly eliminates the factory sleeve flex and component deflection that drives death wobble on Cummins diesel builds running heavy tire packages. The E-coat finish provides superior corrosion protection over standard powdercoat year-round. The Ninja Lock-Washers physically anchor alignment settings under sustained towing load and highway washboards. At ~50 lbs with split-diameter engineering optimized for both maximum tie rod strength and drag link frame clearance — this is a complete, purpose-built front-end correction.
This kit is not for 2014 or newer Ram HD owners — the radius-arm platform uses completely different geometry, see the KIT385 series. It is not for 2013 Ram 3500 owners with crossover steering — look under the truck and verify T-style before ordering. It is not for owners still running the factory Y-style pitman arm on 2003–early 2008 trucks without sourcing the T-style conversion arm separately — the installation will be incomplete without it. And the factory stabilizer clamp will not seat on the 1.75" tie rod — add DC154 or DC151 to your order before you check out. If maximum ProLock alignment lock and matching 1.75" drag link diameter are priorities over price, the KIT380-STL is the correct step up. Text (469) 407-7538 with your year, build date, and stabilizer setup and we'll confirm everything before we ship.
