Description
Die-Cast Aluminum | Anodized + PTFE Corrosion Shield | Dual Independent Motors | Plug-N-Play OBD-II | Lifted Truck Engineered | Free Freight Shipping | Affirm & Afterpay Available
You lifted your Mega Cab. Now getting inside requires an ascent.
You invested serious money in a 4–8" suspension lift, aggressive mud terrains, and premium shocks. What the build sheet didn't account for was the vertical climb waiting for you — and every passenger — every single time you open that Mega Cab door.
Factory steps surrender your ground clearance and still leave a punishing 12-inch gap on a lifted HD rig. Standard automatic boards are worse — their exposed linkages seize in winter road brine, their plastic housings chalk out under desert UV within months, and their step geometry was engineered for a stock-height truck that yours no longer resembles.
The AMP Research PowerStep XL (SKU: 77248-01A) was built specifically for this problem. The integrated aluminum rocker rail housing drops the automatic step surface 2–3 inches lower than a standard PowerStep — precisely bridging the entry gap on lifted 2019–2026 Ram 2500 and 3500 Mega Cab platforms — while retracting completely out of sight when the doors close, leaving your ground clearance and approach angle completely untouched.
Confirmed fitment matrix — 2019–2026 Ram 2500/3500 Mega Cab
| Vehicle | Drivetrain | Cab Style | Model Years | Engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ram 2500 Heavy Duty | 2WD & 4WD | Mega Cab ONLY | 2019–2026 | 6.7L Cummins Diesel · 6.4L HEMI V8 · 6.7L H.O. Cummins |
| Ram 3500 Heavy Duty (SRW) | 2WD & 4WD | Mega Cab ONLY | 2019–2026 | 6.7L Cummins Diesel · 6.4L HEMI V8 · 6.7L H.O. Cummins |
❌ Critical lockout — this SKU does NOT fit the following
| Incompatible Configuration | Reason |
|---|---|
| Ram 2500/3500 Crew Cab (any year) | Rocker panel length and linkage mount spacing are dimensionally different |
| Ram 2500/3500 Quad Cab (any year) | Incompatible rocker geometry — different SKU required |
| Ram 1500 DT/DS (any year) | Light-duty chassis cannot accommodate XL frame guard architecture |
| Ram HD 2018 or older | Previous-generation door sill and electronics do not interface with plug-and-play harness |
| Ram Classic body style (sold alongside 2019 new-body) | Pre-2019 architecture — confirm your build year AND body style |
| Trucks with frame-mounted rock sliders or chassis bed steps | Will physically block the XL step arm deployment and retraction arc |
How to confirm your cab style in 30 seconds: Stand at your truck's rear quarter panel and open the rear door. Mega Cab rear doors are noticeably larger than Crew Cab rear doors — your rear passengers have near-full-size door access with significant cab length behind the rear window. If it feels like a rear seat designed for adults rather than a fold-down bench, you have a Mega Cab.

4 fitment checkpoints — confirm all four before ordering
1. Cab style: Open your rear door. Do you have a true Mega Cab with the extended rear-window cab length? If it's a Crew Cab, stop here — this kit will not fit your rocker panels. Contact us for the correct SKU.
2. Model year: Confirm your Ram HD is 2019 or newer. 2018 and older trucks use a different electronic communication architecture that is not compatible with this plug-and-play harness.
3. Rocker panel clearance: Inspect your underside for frame-mounted rock sliders, drop steps, or custom mud flap hardware. Anything occupying the rocker path will block the XL step arm's deployment and retraction sweep.
4. Tire and offset clearance: Running 37" mud terrains on aggressive negative-offset wheels (−25mm or lower)? Measure your backspacing and verify the front tire will clear the forward deployment linkage arm at full steering lock in both directions before ordering.
Installation — what to expect
Skill level: Moderate DIY — second set of hands strongly recommended due to 104 lb system weight Time: 2–4 hours for most installers with basic mechanical experience Tools required: Basic hand tools · Torque wrench · Trim panel removal tool
Two pro tips that prevent 90% of installation problems:
Route first, mount second. Thread your wiring harness through the Mega Cab door sill seals completely before lifting and bolting the 104 lb aluminum rail housings to the rocker panels. Accessing harness routing paths with the rails already mounted is significantly harder.
Skip the T-taps. Do not use aftermarket wire taps or T-tap connectors on your door-trigger lines. High-vibration Cummins platforms will back those connections out over time, causing step flickering and non-deployment. Use the included plug-and-play harness exclusively.
Ongoing maintenance: Spray the primary pivot pins periodically with dry silicone lubricant — not WD-40, not grease — to keep the dual motors running silently through winter conditions. The PTFE finish handles road salt and grime self-cleaning. The pivot pins need the silicone.
⚠️ Aggressive wheel offset and tire clearance warning
This system is optimized for 4–8" suspension lifts. If your Mega Cab runs negative wheel offsets of −25mm or lower paired with tires wider than 12.5" (35"–37" diameter), manually verify tire clearance against the forward deployment linkage arm during full steering lock sweeps in both directions before installation. This is a physical geometry check — not a brand limitation.
⚠️ Non-returnable after harness connection
Due to the vehicle-specific programming integrated into the plug-and-play electronics controller, this system cannot be returned once the wiring harness has been connected to vehicle power. Verify all cab configuration and fitment checkpoints prior to unboxing. If you have any doubt, text your VIN to (469) 407-7538 before opening the package.
The Obsidian Take — who this is for and who it isn't
The PowerStep XL exists because the standard PowerStep was never designed for a lifted Ram 2500 or 3500 Mega Cab. It was designed for a stock-height truck. When you add 4–8 inches of suspension lift to the heaviest cab configuration Ram makes, the entry gap becomes a legitimate ergonomic problem — not just for the driver, but for every passenger and work crew member getting in and out of that truck all day.
The XL's integrated aluminum rocker housing is not a cosmetic upgrade over the standard board. It's a structural solution. The housing protects the linkage from the road debris, brine, and UV exposure that destroy exposed aftermarket steps within a few seasons. At 104 lbs of total assembly weight, this is freight-class hardware that belongs on a heavy-duty work truck — not a lifestyle accessory bolted to a mall crawler.
This is the right product if: You own a 2019–2026 Ram 2500 or 3500 Mega Cab, your truck runs a 4–8" suspension lift, and you want OEM-grade automatic steps that disappear completely when you're working off-road and deploy instantly when you open the door.
This is not the right product if: You have a Crew Cab, a Quad Cab, a Ram 1500, or a 2018 or older Ram HD. There are correct SKUs for every one of those configurations. Buying the wrong cab fitment means a return that the harness policy may complicate. We would rather lose the sale than ship you the wrong product. Text us first.

Questions we get asked
What makes the PowerStep XL different from the standard AMP Research PowerStep? The standard PowerStep deploys from an exposed linkage beneath the rocker panel. The PowerStep XL integrates a full aluminum rocker rail guard that mounts directly to the truck's rocker panels. Inside that housing, the step linkage is engineered to drop 2–3 inches lower than the standard board, specifically to bridge the entry gap on 4–8" lifted trucks.
Will this fit my 2022 Ram 2500 Crew Cab? No. SKU 77248-01A is engineered strictly for the extended rocker panel length of the Mega Cab body. Crew Cab rocker geometry and mounting dimensions are completely different. Text (469) 407-7538 and we will get you the correct SKU for your Crew Cab immediately.
Do I have to splice into my factory wiring? No wire cutting or splicing required. The plug-and-play pass-through harness reads door-open triggers digitally through the OBD-II port, leaving your factory Ram warranty intact.
Can I install this in my driveway? Yes — it is a moderate DIY install. The 104 lb total system weight makes a second set of hands or a shop lift strongly recommended for safely mounting the rail housings to the rocker panels. Budget 2–4 hours.
I run an aftermarket tuner in my OBD-II port. Will this conflict? Yes — both devices cannot occupy the same OBD-II port simultaneously. You will need an OBD-II Pass-Through Splitter Harness (available from AMP Research or third-party suppliers for $20–$40) to run both the PowerStep XL controller and your tuner at the same time. This is a simple adapter — not a wiring modification.
