Description
The sPOD RAM Short Double Socket Arm (SKU 860245) is the RAM-B-201U-A — the lowest-profile double socket arm for 1-inch (B-size) ball bases, device holders, and adapters. At 2.42 inches overall length, it is the shortest option in the RAM B-size arm lineup. Composite construction. A single spring inside the arm opens the sockets for easy ball insertion; a single adjustment knob locks both sockets simultaneously for near-infinite positional adjustment. Arm only — bases and device holders sold separately.
Use this arm when the device must mount as close to the surface as possible. When standard reach is sufficient, order the medium arm (860240) instead.

Short Arm vs. Medium Arm — Choose the Right Length
| Arm | SKU | RAM Part | Overall Length | Material | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short — this listing | 860245 | RAM-B-201U-A | 2.42 inches | Composite | Minimum profile — device as close to surface as possible; tight mounting locations |
| Medium | 860240 | RAM-B-201U | 3.73 inches | Powder-coated marine-grade aluminum | Standard reach — most cockpit mounting applications |
The short arm saves 1.31 inches of profile versus the medium. Choose it only when mounting clearance is genuinely tight — behind a steering column, inside a tight console, or anywhere the medium arm creates an obstruction. For most sPOD cockpit applications, the medium arm (860240) is the correct choice.
How This Arm Connects a Complete RAM System
| Component | SKU / Source | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Ball base (threaded, suction, or AMPS) | 860225 / 860220 / 860235 | Attaches to vehicle surface; provides first 1-inch ball |
| Short double socket arm — 860245 (this listing) | sPOD | Bridges base ball to device holder; minimum profile |
| Device holder or cradle | RAM Mounts — sold separately | Holds phone, GPS, tablet, or sPOD touchscreen panel |
Critical Compatibility
| Configuration | Notes |
|---|---|
| RAM 1-inch (B-size) ball bases and holders | Compatible — this arm bridges any two B-size components |
| RAM 1.5-inch (C-size) accessories | NOT compatible — C-size uses a different socket dimension |
| Applications where 2.42 inches of reach is insufficient | Order the medium arm (860240) at 3.73 inches instead |
Common Questions
When should I choose this over the medium arm? Only when mounting clearance is genuinely tight — inside a console, behind a column, or anywhere the medium arm creates an obstruction or positions the device too far from the surface. For most standard cockpit mounting applications, the medium arm (860240) provides better reach and easier adjustment without adding meaningful bulk.
Is composite weaker than the aluminum medium arm? For standard cockpit accessory loads — phones, GPS units, sPOD panels, tablets — composite is entirely adequate. The RAM ball and socket clamping mechanism handles the retention load; the arm material itself is not the limiting factor under normal use. Tighten the adjustment knob firmly for off-road use and check after the first trail run.
Will this work with a 1.5-inch C-size ball? No. This arm uses 1-inch B-size sockets at both ends. RAM's 1.5-inch C-size components use a different, larger socket. Confirm ball size across all components before ordering.
The Obsidian Take
The 860245 is for the builder where 3.73 inches of arm is too much — tight console positions, narrow dash locations, or anywhere minimum profile is a genuine requirement. Same ball-and-socket technology, same near-infinite adjustability, same B-size compatibility as the medium arm. At 2.42 inches overall, it is the lowest-profile option in the B-size lineup.
If mounting clearance is not a constraint, order the medium arm (860240). It provides more reach, easier adjustment, and aluminum construction. Use the short arm when you specifically need the device closer to the surface.
