How do I know if 5 feet covers my routing path or if I need 10 feet? Measure the actual routed path — not straight-line distance between the module and the switch interface. Run a tape measure through the same path the cable will take: through the firewall grommet, along the routing channel, to the switch panel location. In a compact truck or SUV this is typically 4–7 feet. In a full-size truck with complex routing, it can exceed 10 feet. When the measurement is close to 5 feet, order the 10-foot cable — managing a few extra feet of slack is far less problematic than a cable that comes up short mid-install.
Can I use a standard 5-foot CAT-6 patch cable? The RJ45 CAT-6 spec is standard but the sPOD cable uses reinforced, weather-resistant construction rated for vibration, temperature swing, and moisture in off-road environments. A commercial patch cable will fail prematurely under those conditions.
