The Third-Gen Ram Was Built to Work. The Complete Steering System Is Built to Match.
The 2003–2013 Dodge Ram and Ram 2500/3500 4WD — the legendary DH/DJ heavy-duty generation — has a reputation built on mechanical reliability, Cummins diesel loyalty, and a platform that outlasts anything else on the road. You lifted it. You put real tires under it. You built it with intention.
And the factory steering layout was the one core bottleneck that never kept pace.
For 2003–2008 trucks specifically, the weak Y-style layout was a chronic problem — the drag link connected directly to the tie rod bar, causing tie-rod roll, uneven tire scrub, and the front-end play behind the Dodge death wobble feedback loop. Even on the updated 2009–2013 T-style configuration, the factory sleeves flex under the immense weight of a 5.9L or 6.7L Cummins and wide aftermarket wheel offsets.
The Apex Chassis KIT380 series is the comprehensive mechanical correction. A complete heavy-duty tie rod and drag link assembly — both links in one installation, matched geometry, one alignment.
⚠️ CRITICAL — READ BEFORE ORDERING:
2003–2008 trucks require KIT380P-STL. These model years use the factory Y-style layout with a pitman arm sector shaft angle that is incompatible with the T-style crossover conversion. The KIT380P-STL bundles a precision-matched Mopar T-style compatible pitman arm required to complete the conversion correctly. Ordering KIT380-STL for a 2003–2008 truck will result in an incomplete installation.
2009–2013 trucks use KIT380-STL. These trucks already run T-style geometry from the factory — KIT380-STL is a direct bolt-on upgrade using your factory pitman arm.
Stabilizer clamp not compatible: Your factory thin steel stabilizer clamp will NOT fit the 1.75" outer diameter of this tie rod. You must add an aftermarket 1.75" ID stabilizer bracket to your order. Text us your stabilizer brand and we'll confirm the correct bracket before we ship.
The Obsidian Take
Three complete master steering kits exist for the 2003–2013 Ram HD platform — matte black DOM steel (this kit), anodized black aluminum (KIT380-BLK), and raw polished aluminum (KIT380-POL). The steel variant is the maximum-duty choice — engineered for the owner who uses their 3rd-gen rig as a heavy-hauling work truck, cross-country towing platform, or trail explorer where direct impact contact with rocks and stumps is a regular reality.
Both the tie rod and drag link are built from massive 1.75" diameter DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) SAE 1020 heavy-wall steel tubing. The DOM process eliminates the internal weld seam and produces uniform wall thickness — the same cross-section on both components is possible on the 3rd-gen platform because the legacy trailing-arm and front-axle geometry provides a wider clearance envelope than the tighter 2014+ radius-arm frame architecture. Both bars at 1.75" delivers matching yield resistance across the complete steering track.
The platform conversion split — the most important detail on this page:
2003–2008.5 trucks (Y-style to T-style — requires KIT380P-STL): These model years shipped with the weak factory Y-style layout where the drag link connected directly to the tie rod instead of the knuckle — causing the tie-rod roll, slop, and death wobble susceptibility that 3rd-gen owners know too well. Converting to the superior T-style crossover geometry requires not just the new linkage — it requires a pitman arm with the specific sector shaft indexing and taper depth to match the new drag link plane without binding. The KIT380P-STL bundles that pitman arm. KIT380-STL alone will not complete this conversion correctly on a 2003–2008 truck.
2009–2013 trucks (direct heavy-duty upgrade — KIT380-STL): These trucks already run T-style geometry from the factory. The KIT380-STL is a direct bolt-on upgrade onto your factory pitman arm — no conversion required.
Both versions carry hot-forged SAE 1045 solid steel joint housings, CNC machined for dimensional accuracy, and induction heat-treated SAE 4140 chromoly ball studs with rolled step threads. The ProLock™ system locks your alignment — machined thread keyway washers, dual-thread jam nuts with 3 integrated set screws on the wrench flats. Your alignment settings physically cannot shift out of spec under maximum towing loads or rough highway expansion joints.
The reversible taper sleeve — a detail that matters on lifted trucks:
On lifted trucks where the drag link angle is altered, mounting an aftermarket steering stabilizer into the tapered drag link hole can cause severe clearance binding. Apex drills the mounting hole straight through and includes a custom reversible stainless steel taper sleeve — allowing you to mount your stabilizer from either the top or bottom face depending on your clearance needs. No fabrication. No modification.

| 2012 | ✅ | ✅ | KIT380-STL (standard) | DJ |
| 2013 | ✅ | ✅ | KIT380-STL (standard) | DJ |
2003–2008 owners: You need KIT380P-STL — not KIT380-STL. The pitman arm included in KIT380P-STL is required to complete the Y-to-T conversion correctly. Ordering the standard kit for a Y-style truck will leave your installation incomplete.
Dodge Ram to Ram rebrand note: In 2010 Dodge Ram rebranded as Ram. The DH/DJ platform did not change mechanically. Both fit.
❌ This unit does NOT fit:
- 2014–2026 Ram 2500/3500 — new radius-arm chassis architecture. See KIT385 series.
- Ram 2500/3500 2WD — no solid front axle or steering linkage on 2WD platform
- Ram 1500 — different platform entirely
- 2002 and earlier Ram HD — different steering geometry
2014+ critical warning: Installing on a 2014+ Ram HD will result in geometry incompatibility. The 2014+ platform requires the KIT385 series. Confirm your Ram is a 2003–2013 DH/DJ platform before ordering.

Before You Order — 4 Fitment Checkpoints
1. Model year and SKU selection (Critical):
- 2003–2008: Order KIT380P-STL — includes the required pitman arm for Y-to-T conversion
- 2009–2013: Order KIT380-STL — direct bolt-on, factory pitman arm retained If you order the wrong SKU for your year, your installation will be incomplete.
2. Platform confirmation: Fits 2003–2013 DH/DJ platform only. 2014+ Ram HD will not fit — see KIT385 series.
3. Stabilizer clamp: Your factory thin steel stabilizer clamp cannot mount to the 1.75" outer diameter of this tie rod. Order a 1.75" ID aftermarket stabilizer bracket concurrently. Text us your stabilizer brand and model and we'll confirm the correct bracket.
4. Application match: DOM steel is the right choice for rock crawling, heavy trail use, and work trucks where the linkage will take direct impact. For street-biased daily drivers where unsprung weight reduction matters — see KIT380-BLK or KIT380-POL.
Installation Notes
Intermediate-level install. Replacing both steering components simultaneously — professional alignment immediately after is mandatory.
- Alignment mandatory: Full front-end alignment — caster, camber, and toe — required after installation. Complete steering linkage replacement directly affects toe, caster, and bump steer. Do not drive until aligned.
- 2003–2008 pitman arm: If converting a Y-style truck, the pitman arm included in KIT380P-STL must be installed as part of this upgrade. Do not attempt the conversion without it.
- Stabilizer clamp: Factory stabilizer clamp will not fit the 1.75" tie rod. Install a 1.75" ID aftermarket stabilizer bracket before mounting your stabilizer.
- Torque specs: Tie rod and drag link end jam nuts — torque to manufacturer specification per Apex install sheet. Castellated nuts at knuckle and pitman arm — torque to 70–90 ft-lbs and install cotter pin. ProLock jam nuts — torque per specification to engage locking feature.
- Track bar: For lifts exceeding 4", a track bar relocation bracket is recommended to maintain proper front axle centering.
- Dual stabilizer clearance: If running an aftermarket dual steering stabilizer package, verify axle brackets clear the hot-forged 2.5-ton joint housings at full steering lock before installation.
Installation Warning: Complete steering linkage replacement directly affects steering geometry, scrub radius, toe settings, bump steer, and caster. Do not drive until a full front-end alignment has been completed. 2003–2008 trucks require KIT380P-STL — ordering KIT380-STL for these years will result in an incomplete installation. Installing on 2014+ Ram HD will result in geometry incompatibility. Once installed, this unit is non-returnable.
Questions We Get Asked
Why do 2003–2008 trucks require KIT380P-STL instead of KIT380-STL? Factory 2003–2008 trucks used the Y-style steering layout — the drag link connected directly to the tie rod bar rather than the steering knuckle. Converting to the T-style crossover geometry requires not just new linkage but a pitman arm with the correct sector shaft indexing and taper depth to match the new drag link plane without binding. The KIT380P-STL bundles that matched pitman arm. The standard KIT380-STL does not include it and cannot complete the Y-to-T conversion on these years.
Why won't my factory stabilizer clamp work on this kit? The factory thin steel stabilizer clamp is sized for the OEM tie rod diameter. The Apex 1.75" DOM steel tube is significantly larger in outer diameter. The factory clamp cannot seat correctly on the upgraded bar. You need a 1.75" ID aftermarket steering stabilizer bracket. Text us your stabilizer brand and model and we'll confirm the correct bracket.
What is the reversible taper sleeve? On lifted trucks where the drag link angle changes, mounting a steering stabilizer into the tapered hole can cause clearance problems. Apex drills the stabilizer mounting hole straight through and includes a reversible stainless steel taper sleeve — allowing you to mount the stabilizer from either the top or bottom face depending on your lift height and clearance needs. No fabrication required.
Does this fit the 5.9L Cummins trucks? Yes — compatible with 5.9L Cummins (2003–2007), 6.7L Cummins (2007.5–2013), and gas engine configurations.
Why buy the complete kit instead of individual components? Both components installed in one session with one alignment fee. The matched 1.75" DOM geometry ensures zero mismatch between the tie rod and drag link angles. If you prefer to phase the work, individual tie rod SKUs are available separately — but both links corrected simultaneously is the complete fix.
