Description
One kit. One session. One alignment fee. Zero maintenance.
The factory tie rod and drag link on the P221 Super Duty were engineered for narrow stock tires at factory height. Lift the truck 2–6 inches, add 35s or 37s, and the OEM adjustment sleeves flex and deflect under lateral load — feeding the chronic front-end wander and bump steer that lifted P221 owners know too well.
The Apex Chassis KIT374-BLK is the complete black powdercoat aluminum correction for the P221 platform. A 1.75" solid aluminum tie rod paired with a matching 1.5" solid aluminum drag link — matched geometry, one installation session, one alignment fee. Industrial black powdercoat finish. Set it and forget it.

Why the diameter split matters: The tie rod runs knuckle-to-knuckle across the lower axle beam where lateral loading is highest. On the P221 frame, the clearance window around the track bar bracket bolt heads and differential housing is tighter than on the 2017+ redesigned platform — a 2" or larger bar binds at full steering lock on this geometry. The 1.75" spec is the largest diameter that clears the P221 envelope while delivering full structural yield strength. The drag link operates near the frame rail, engine crossmember, and track bar brackets — the 1.5" diameter clears those components through the complete articulation cycle.
Why black powdercoat: The industrial powdercoat is not cosmetic — it's a physical barrier against winter road salt, brine spray, mud, and moisture. Raw polished aluminum develops a natural patina over time that requires occasional polish to maintain. The black powdercoat requires nothing. For a truck that earns its miles in real conditions, zero maintenance is the right specification.

❌ This kit does NOT fit — read before ordering
| Vehicle | Reason | Correct SKU |
|---|---|---|
| 2017–2026 Ford F-250 / F-350 (P558 / P702) | Steering box position changed in 2017 — drag link geometry incompatible | KIT375-BLK |
| 2004 and earlier Super Duty | Different steering geometry — not compatible | — |
| Ford F-450 / F-550 | Wide-track commercial front axle — incompatible tracking widths | — |
| Ford Super Duty 2WD | Twin I-beam independent front suspension — no solid axle steering linkage | — |
| Ford F-150 / GM / Ram / Toyota | Different platform entirely | — |
P221 vs P558 generation split — critical: Ford completely redesigned the Super Duty steering geometry between the 2016 and 2017 model years. A 2017 or newer Super Duty is P558 or P702 — this kit will not align with your steering box. If your truck is 2017 or later, stop here and see KIT375-BLK.
⚠️ BDS Suspension users — read before ordering: On the P221 platform, certain BDS Suspension lift kits using dropped track bar brackets or custom heavy-duty track bars run a compressed clearance envelope near the axle housing. The 1.5" Apex drag link can contact specific BDS track bar assemblies at full steering lock. If you are running a BDS lift on your 2005–2016 Super Duty, text your exact BDS suspension model to (469) 407-7538 before ordering. We manually verify clearance before shipping.
Supporting mod requirements:
- Lifts 2–4": Direct bolt-on. No additional hardware required beyond the kit.
- Lifts exceeding 4": Track bar relocation bracket strongly recommended. Verify pitman arm drop compatibility before ordering. Text (469) 407-7538 with your lift brand and pitman arm setup and we'll confirm before we ship.
Before You Buy — Questions We Get Asked
Q: What's the difference between KIT374-BLK and KIT374-POL?
Mechanically identical — same 1.75" x 1.5" solid 7075-T6 bars, same 1.25" threaded shanks, same ProLock system, same ~46 lbs. The BLK is industrial black powdercoat — completely maintenance-free and better corrosion protection for working trucks that see road salt and weather year-round. The POL is raw mirror-polished aluminum — show-quality finish that occasional polish is required to maintain. Same performance. Choose based on your use case.
Q: Does this fit my F-350 dually?
Yes — F-350 SRW and DRW are both fully confirmed across the entire 2005–2016 P221 range. The only Super Duty trucks locked out are F-450 and F-550 wide-track commercial chassis.
Q: Why buy the complete kit instead of individual components?
Both components installed in one session with one alignment fee — matched geometry across the complete steering track. Phasing the work means two shop visits, two alignment charges, and an intermediate period of mismatched components. If you prefer to stage it, KIT372-BLK (tie rod) and KIT371-BLK (drag link) are available individually.
Q: How hard is this install and what will I need?
Intermediate difficulty. Standard hand tools, a torque wrench, and a floor jack are required. A full front-end alignment — caster, camber, and toe — immediately after installation is mandatory. Do not drive at highway speeds until alignment is complete. The Apex installation sheet with full torque specs and cotter pin sequence ships with the kit. Budget one garage session for the swap and one same-day alignment appointment.
The Obsidian Take
The KIT374-BLK is built for the P221 Super Duty owner running a 2–6" lift who wants front-end wander eliminated permanently and wants a finish that holds up without a maintenance schedule. The 1.75" tie rod is the largest diameter that fits the P221 differential clearance envelope at full steering lock. The 1.25" threaded shanks eliminate the shank deflection that makes lifted P221 Super Dutys push and wander under load. The ProLock system physically locks alignment settings under sustained towing loads and highway washboards. The industrial black powdercoat seals the aluminum against road salt, brine, and moisture year-round — no polish required, no patina to manage. One kit, one session, one alignment fee.
This kit is not for 2017 or newer Super Dutys — Ford moved the steering box between the P221 and P558 generations and the drag link geometry changed with it. See KIT375-BLK. It is not for F-450 or F-550 owners. It is not for dedicated rock crawlers taking direct boulder impacts — see the chromoly steel version for that application. If you're running a BDS Suspension lift, text us your exact model before you order — certain BDS configurations have a drag link clearance conflict that we verify manually before shipping. And if the mirror finish matters more than zero maintenance, the mechanically identical KIT374-POL in polished aluminum is the right call instead.
