The Factory Steering on Your 3rd-Gen Ram Wasn't Built for What You're Asking It to Do.
The 2003–2013 Dodge Ram and Ram 2500/3500 4WD platform runs a legendary solid front axle that responds exceptionally well to upgrades — provided the steering linkage keeps up. Factory tie rod and drag link sleeves were engineered for narrow stock tires at stock height. When you lift it, add 35s or 37s, and place a heavy Cummins diesel block over the front axle, the factory linkage introduces the component deflection and slop behind Dodge death wobble.
The Apex Chassis KIT180 is the direct heavy-duty replacement that keeps up. A 1.75" DOM tie rod paired with a 1.5" DOM drag link — split-diameter engineering that maximizes strength at the front-facing impact point while maintaining the clearance profile the upper drag link requires. Oversized rod ends, Ninja Lock-Washers, and E-coat protection. Both components. One kit. The complete front-end correction.
⚠️ CRITICAL FITMENT WARNINGS — Read Before Ordering:
2003–early 2008 trucks with Y-style steering: This kit is T-style linkage. If your early 2008 or older truck has the factory Y-style pitman arm and has not been converted, you must purchase a T-style compatible pitman arm separately to complete this installation. The pitman arm is NOT included with KIT180.
2008.5 mid-year transition: Ram transitioned to factory T-style steering mid-year in 2008. Late-2008 trucks (built after approximately mid-2008) already have the T-style pitman arm from the factory and do NOT need the conversion pitman arm. Early-2008 trucks still have Y-style and DO need it. Check your build date or look under the truck to confirm your configuration before ordering the pitman arm.
2013 Ram 3500 — T-style vs crossover: The 2013 Ram 3500 was produced in both T-style and crossover steering configurations. This kit fits T-style ONLY. Crossover steering (where the drag link attaches directly to the knuckle and does not connect to the tie rod) is NOT compatible. Verify your configuration before ordering.
Factory stabilizer clamp incompatible: The factory thin steel stabilizer clamp will not fit the 1.75" tie rod. Order DC154 for OE-style stabilizers or DC151 for Fox ATS-style stabilizers.
Rough Country Dual Steering Stabilizer: KIT180 is NOT compatible.
Dual stabilizer kits: Oversized tie rod end housings may require bracket modifications at the tie rod ends for proper fit.
The Obsidian Take
The KIT180 occupies a specific position in the Apex 3rd-gen Ram HD lineup — maximum raw material strength over factory parts, with the split-diameter engineering that balances structural yield and frame clearance.
The 1.75" x 1.5" split — why both diameters matter:
The main tie rod is machined from a massive 1.75" diameter DOM SAE 1020 heavy-wall steel tube — the front-facing component that takes direct trail contact and handles the maximum lateral load across the solid axle beam. The DOM process eliminates the internal weld seam and produces a uniform wall thickness that resists bending under direct impact.
The drag link is machined from a 1.5" diameter DOM SAE 1020 steel tube. The drag link operates in the tighter space near the passenger-side frame rails and sway bar — the 1.5" diameter delivers the structural rigidity needed while providing the clearance profile that prevents contact with those frame components during full suspension travel. This is the same engineering logic behind the split on the 2014+ platform — tight frame clearances dictate drag link diameter.
Both components use hot-forged SAE 1045 solid steel joint housings, CNC machined for dimensional accuracy, and SAE 4140 hot-forged chromoly ball studs with induction heat treatment and rolled step threads. The Ninja Lock-Washers replace weak factory adjusting sleeves — the rod ends thread directly into the connecting rods and are secured by dual jam nuts with Apex's proprietary Ninja Lock-Washers. Your toe settings cannot vibrate loose on a washboard.
The E-coat electrochemical finish seals the raw steel against winter road salt, rust, and trail moisture significantly better than standard powdercoat or spray paint.
How KIT180 compares to KIT380-STL:
Both use DOM SAE 1020 steel and cover the 2003–2013 platform. The KIT380-STL scales both components to 1.75" and uses the premium ProLock Link Connect System with machined keyway washers. The KIT180 uses the 1.75" x 1.5" split-diameter design with Ninja Lock-Washers — delivering significant performance improvement over factory at a more accessible price point. Text us your build and intended use and we'll confirm which is right.
The 2003–2008.5 geometry story:
From 2003 through early 2008, Dodge used the weak Y-style layout where the drag link connected directly to the tie rod bar — causing tie-rod roll, tire scrub, and the mechanical slop behind death wobble. This kit installs as T-style crossover linkage. If your early-2008 or older truck still has the Y-style pitman arm, you need to source the T-style pitman arm separately. Late-2008 trucks (2008.5+) transitioned to T-style from the factory and do not need the conversion arm — but verify your build date before ordering.

2008.5 note: Ram transitioned to factory T-style mid-year 2008. Late-2008 trucks do NOT need the pitman arm conversion. Early-2008 trucks DO. Check your build date or look under the truck to confirm.
2013 Ram 3500: T-style and crossover were both produced in 2013. This kit fits T-style ONLY. If the drag link goes from the steering box to the knuckle without touching the tie rod — that is crossover steering and this kit is not compatible.

Before You Order — 5 Fitment Checkpoints
1. Platform confirmation: 2003–2013 DH/DJ only. 2014+ requires KIT385 series.
2. 2003–2008 pitman arm: Early 2008 and older with Y-style steering require a T-style pitman arm (sold separately). Late 2008 (2008.5+) already has T-style from the factory. Verify your build date before ordering the pitman arm.
3. 2013 Ram 3500 steering type: Look at the drag link. If it runs from the steering box to the tie rod — T-style, fits. If it runs from the steering box directly to the knuckle — crossover, does not fit.
4. Stabilizer clamp: Add DC154 (OE-style) or DC151 (Fox ATS) to your order. The factory clamp will not fit the 1.75" tie rod.
5. Rough Country dual stabilizer: If running Rough Country dual stabilizer — not compatible. Text us your setup and we'll confirm the correct unit.
Installation Notes
Intermediate install. Both components replaced simultaneously — professional alignment immediately after is mandatory.
- Alignment mandatory: Full front-end alignment — caster, camber, and toe — required after installation. Do not drive until aligned.
- 2003–early 2008 pitman arm: If converting from Y-style, install the T-style pitman arm before or during installation.
- Ninja Lock-Washers: Fully engage the Ninja Lock-Washer tabs against the jam nut flats after alignment is finalized and torqued to spec per Apex installation sheet.
- Stabilizer clamp: Replace factory clamp with DC154 or DC151 before mounting stabilizer.
- Torque specs: Castle nuts at knuckle and pitman arm — torque to 70–90 ft-lbs and install cotter pin per Apex install sheet.
- Track bar: For lifts exceeding 4", a track bar relocation bracket is recommended.
- Minimum engagement mark: If visible on drag link end threads — threads are beyond safe engagement depth. Contact us before proceeding.
Installation Warning: Do not drive until full front-end alignment is complete. 2003–early 2008 Y-style trucks require T-style pitman arm before installation. 2013 Ram 3500 crossover steering is NOT compatible. Factory stabilizer clamp must be replaced. Once installed, non-returnable.
Questions We Get Asked
What's the difference between KIT180 and KIT380-STL? Both use DOM SAE 1020 steel and cover the 2003–2013 Ram HD platform. The KIT380-STL scales both components to 1.75" and uses the premium ProLock keyway washer system. The KIT180 uses the 1.75" tie rod / 1.5" drag link split with Ninja Lock-Washers — significant upgrade over factory at a more accessible price point. Text us your build and we'll confirm which is right for your application.
How do I know if my 2008 truck has Y-style or T-style steering? Check your build date on the door jamb sticker. Trucks built after approximately mid-2008 have factory T-style. Trucks built in early 2008 have Y-style and need the conversion pitman arm. You can also look under the truck — Y-style has the drag link connecting to the tie rod bar mid-span. T-style has the drag link running from the steering box directly to the knuckle.
How do I know if my 2013 Ram 3500 has T-style or crossover steering? Look at the drag link. T-style: drag link runs from steering box to the tie rod bar. Crossover: drag link runs from steering box directly to the knuckle without touching the tie rod. Crossover is NOT compatible with this kit. Text us your VIN and we'll confirm.
Why won't my factory stabilizer clamp work? The factory clamp is sized for the narrow OEM tie rod. The Apex 1.75" DOM tube is significantly larger. You need DC154 (OE-style stabilizer) or DC151 (Fox ATS stabilizer). Text us your stabilizer brand and we'll confirm.
Will this fix death wobble on my 3rd-gen Ram? Yes — provided ball joints, track bar bushings, and steering box are in good condition. The primary driver is component flex — factory links use thin sleeves that deflect under heavy diesel weight and wide wheel offsets. The KIT180's oversized DOM construction and direct thread-in joint design eliminate that flex point.
